OBLIGATORY BIO:
Like Sinatra, Springsteen and Artificial Food Flavoring,
I was born in New Jersey.
the age of 6. These tapes would be sent to Germany as 'audio
letters' to my sister. She would record over them and send them
back. My father was alas no George Martin, and used normal bias,
120 minute Realistic brand cassettes. It was this poor Radio Shack
quality that ignited what would become decades of communication
issues between myself and my sister.
Singing became my release from a normal and ordinary childhood.
My days were lost in PBS. I developed a particular fondness for
Mr. Rogers as well as Gordon & Big Bird from Sesame Street.
Though I did not turn out to be gay in my adult life, I've nevertheless
developed a habit of changing my shoes just before cooking and
eating chicken.
My family moved to western Pennsylvania just before I entered the
third grade. I was heartbroken as Peanut Butter TastyKakes were
not yet available in the Pittsburgh area in the early 80's. However,
I managed to find a suitable emotional substitute in locally made
Blue Star Potato Chips, which came in a big metal tin.
One morning, angry at a now-emptied tin after an intense binge,
I began to violently hit and slap its top and underside. The loud
booming echo of its salty slathered interior immediately brought my
mother rushing to my aid. It was at this moment I realized the awesome
power music has for getting more food and the attention of women.
Forced to choose an instrument in 4th grade, my mother suggested
the clarinet, since we already had one laying around the house from
my sister's foray into the arts. She also put me in my sister's clothes
for my first lesson, or should have, to prepare me for the years of ridicule
that a male clarinet player would receive in a blue collar football rural PA.
A few years later, the music teacher plead for kids to switch to trombone.
Though young and still in braces, this opportunity was a welcome upgrade.
Indeed, any other instrument was an upgrade. It would also give me the
opportunity to confidently use the word 'Boner' often & without fear of
reprimand.
It was later in the same year that I picked up an acoustic guitar, and by
junior year, I was playing electric guitar after seeing the video of
Eddie Van Halen. He looked like he was having fun, and as high school
went by, playing electric guitar was the armor to my shy, awkward nerdiness.
I rediscovered recording in college with a small 4 track, recording everything
and anything. By the time I hit NYC in 1999, I'd discovered the computer's
power for more than just video games and began my continued affair with sound.
